In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the symbol of London Underground and London’s transport system - the ‘Roundel’ - Art on the Underground commissioned 100 artists to make brand new works of art inspired by the Roundel as a contemporary symbol for a world class transport system. All 100 works were on display for three weeks in London’s East End. A selection is now exhibited on the Underground as posters in a range of formats and can be seen at St James’s Park, White City, Piccadilly Circus and Heathrow Underground stations.

The series demonstrates a contemporary vision of one of the world’s most recognised brands. Reflecting upon a tradition initiated by Frank Pick in the 1920s and 30s, the artists interpreted what the ‘logo for London’ means to them today, employing the Roundel as a symbolic element of their works as opposed to its more frequent use as a branding mark.Invited artists were drawn from an international pool of individuals connected to the Tube through its commissioning programme Art on the Underground. The collection reflects the programme’s support for artists at various stages in their careers, from recent graduates to artists with a worldwide reputation.

Berlín | Saioa Márquez

MUNDOS PARALELOS

Su debilidad por el arte se reivindicó desde su infancia  a través de dibujos y diseños que poco a poco fue madurando y materializando de una forma más profesional. Saioa Márquez (Bilbao, 1978), Licenciada en Bellas Artes por la Universidad del País Vasco, nos muestra a través de sus fotografías escenas extraídas de la realidad pero expuestas de una manera muy diferente a la que nuestros ojos son capaces de percibir a simple vista. Y es que lejos de plasmar una realidad lineal, objetiva o convencional, Saioa nos conduce hacia un plano mucho más sofisticado envuelto de creatividad que fluye paralelo a la realidad. Son imágenes reconocibles pero interpretadas de otra manera. Un mundo audaz e imaginario cuyo origen está en el click y que poco a poco se va incubando en un proceso artístico reservado exclusivamente para el artista.

Su obra Berlín, ganadora de la semana de la Arquitectura del Concurso de Fotografía e Ilustración 12×7 organizado por nuzart.com, es parte de este proceso creativo donde se funden  arquitectura, fotografía e ilustración sin solaparse. Un perfecto entramado de mundos paralelos que se traducen en Arte.

-¿Cuándo te iniciaste en la fotografía?

En los últimos años de la universidad empecé a interesarme por la fotografía y mi tío me regaló su cámara reflex que el no usaba. He aprendido por mi cuenta.

-¿Cómo definirías tu estilo?

Me gusta trabajar sobre realidades que me encuentro en la calle y sacarlas de contexto, intentando no perder realismo. También me encanta abstraer figuraciones, aunque no tengo un único estilo.

-¿El retoque fotográfico es parte del proceso artístico de una obra?…

Si, desde luego que es un proceso artístico, uno más. Es el artista quien elige si quiere utilizarlo o no. Hay debate. Para cierta gente el retoque pone en duda el valor artístico de la fotografía. Yo no soy purista y creo que cuando las cosas están bien hechas, da igual que sea pintura, foto, analógico o digital. Valoro la sinceridad de los artistas y creo que debemos de indicar las técnicas utilizadas. Está la falsa creencia de que lo digital “se hace sólo”, algo completamente falso, hay mucho trabajo detrás del digital y para procesar una fotografía también hay que saber mirar, exactamente igual que cuando sacas la foto.

-Cuando haces una foto a algo concreto, te imaginas cuál será el resultado…?

Si, aunque eso no quiere decir que lo vaya a conseguir. Los conceptos me rondan por la cabeza, ya sean visuales o no. De una sesión entera igual sólo en unas pocas fotografías he conseguido lo que buscaba, y a veces ¡en ninguna lo logro!. Tampoco siempre depende de ti, de ti depende la creatividad o la técnica, pero en mi caso que no me gusta alterar la realidad ésta no siempre está como uno quiere, evidentemente.

-El resurgimiento de la fotografía con las nuevas tecnologías es….

Muy interesante y cansino. Resurgimiento no diría tampoco, han nacido nuevas técnicas, se han abaratado los costes dando más oportunidades a más artistas y eso siempre es bueno. Aunque también es difícil hoy en día encontrar cosas interesantes porque hay tanto… hay que buscar bien para encontrar calidad.

Y la tecnología también es cansina porque avanza muy rápido, los programas de procesado, mejoras en las cámaras… a mi me encantan estos avances, pero no se si seré capaz de seguir a este ritmo toda la vida… A saber que tecnologías manejamos dentro de x años. Por ejemplo he oído que alguna marca se está planteando quitar el visor de las cámaras profesionales, me parece una barbaridad! Espero que no pierdan el norte.

-¿Qué fotógrafos o artistas han influido en tu estilo y en tu manera de ver las cosas?

A montones… me encantan esa visualidad tan inquietante que transmiten David Lynch o por decir alguien más cercano Julio Medem. Fotógrafos, desde los clásicos como Stieglitz, Doisneau, Lisette Model por su espontaneidad, Cindy Sherman con sus “autorretratos conceptuales”… a los más actuales.

La mayoría no se ni quienes habrán sido… tantas cosas me han podido influenciar.

- Si tuvieras que elegir tu fotografía preferida sería…

Cuando me preguntan cual es para mi la mejor, me suelo bloquear, no tengo una mejor. Una de las que me han gustado mucho es la serie “Hope” de Erwin Olaf.

PARALLEL WORLDS

Saioa’s penchant for art was evident at an early age, particularly with pencil drawings and designs which have been developed and professionalized over time. Saioa Márquez (Bilbao, 1978), who has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country, shows us through her photographs, scenes taken from reality but displayed in a very different way from what our eyes percieve at first sight. And far from translating a “linear”, objective or conventional reality, Saioa leads us to a more sophisticated level wrapped in creativity that runs parallel to reality…, recognizable images but interpreted differently. A bold and imaginary world that begins with a simple click to be gradually incubated in an artistic process reserved exclusively for the artist.

Her work Berlín, -winner of the “Architecture” week of nuzart.com’s “12×7” Photography and Illustration Contest-, is part of this creative process that fuses architecture, photography and illustration without interference or overlap between them.  A perfect set of parallel worlds that are translated into ART.

-When did your passion for Photography start?

In my last years of University I became interested in Photography, and my uncle gave me his SLR camera. Since then, I’ve learned on my own.

-How would you define your style?

I like working on realities that I find out on the street and get them out of context trying not to lose realism. I also like abstract figurations, although I don’t focus my work on a particular style.

-Do you think that the Image retouch / photo manipulation is part of the artistic process of an artwork?

Yes of course it’s an artistic process. And it is the artist who decides whether to use it or not. But there is debate about it. For some people, Photo-Retouching calls into question the artistic value of Photography. I’m not a purist and I think that when things are well done, no matter if it’s a painting or photography, either digital or analog. I appreciate the sincerity of the artist and I also think that we should all indicate and report the techniques we use. There is a false belief that digital photography is done by itself: something competely false as there is much work behind the digital process and also because to take a picture you must know how to look.

-When you take a picture of something specific, can you imagine what will the outcome be?

Yes, but it doesn’t always mean that I’ll achieve it. Concepts and ideas swarm through my head and, off an entire sesión, I might only get what I wanted from a few pictures, and sometimes from none of them. It’s not always up to you. Creativity or technique depend on me, but in my case I don’t like to alter reality as it’s not always as I would like it to be, obviously.

-The resurgence or “revivel” of Photography with new technologies is…

Very Interesting but tiring. I would not say “Revival”; new techniques are born, costs have been reduced, giving more opportunities for more artists…and this is always good. Although, nowadays, it’s difficult to find interesting things because there are so many… We have to seek a lot to find something really good.

And Technology is also stressful because it goes so fast!…New processing programs, improvements in cameras….I love all these developments, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to continue at this ratea ll my life…Who knows how technologies will be in “x” years time. For example: I heard that a popular Brand is considering removing the viewfinder from the profesional cameras…I think this is outrageous! I hope they don’t lose the sense…

-What photographers and artists have influenced your style and your way of seeing things?

There are so many!…I love that so disturbing visual style that convey David Lynch and Julio Medem. And photographers, from classics like Stieglitz, Doineau, Lisette Model for her spontaneity or Cindy Sherman with her “conceptual self-portraits”…, to the most current ones. And others, who are the majority, I don’t even know who they could have been… So many things have influenced me.

-If you had to choose your favourite picture it would be…

When someone asks me which is the best for me, I get “blocked”, I haven’t got a favourite one… but one that I really like is the series “Hope” by Erwin Olaf.

la parada | lamiradadegema

Nacida hace 28 primaveras en Madrid, Gema Sánchez Nájera alias lamiradadegema, pasó su infancia rodeada de películas de vaqueros a ritmo flamenco desahogando sus días veraniegos en las costas de España, luchando cada temporada por olvidarse del mar y adentrarse en museos, castillos y demás pasatiempos del turismo de masas. Con semejante cuadro, aún hoy se pregunta como llegó a interesarse por la cultura. Supone que fue por su encuentro con unos blocks antiguos de su madre, pinturas a carboncillo que le iban acompañando año tras año en la escuela. Siempre quiso estudiar arte, aunque no se lo planteó como carrera hasta que tuvo que echar la prescripción en la universidad. Su meta había sido encaminar su vida hacia el mundo de la imagen, pero los últimos años de instituto, con ese soplo de nuevas experiencias que acompaña a la adolescencia, le hizo replantearse su futuro profesional y, cambió de rumbo. Y así fue como se dejó seducir por su amor al arte, sin más pretensión que la de disfrutar.

Amante de la fotografía como hobby desde sus primeras inquitudes visuales ante la vida, compaginó su primer año de carrera acudiendo a un taller de fotografía donde aprendió las técnicas del revelado en blanco y negro. Más interesada en el trabajo de postproducción, pasaba las horas en ese cuarto oscuro donde nacen las sombras sobre papeles mojados. Más tarde, por un giro del destino, se vio obligada a exiliarse al país de los cuentos sobre obras de arte, finalizando la carrera a la vez que se adentraba en el apasionante mundo del diseño gráfico. Actualmente vive retomando el amor que sentía por la fotografía y viajando, siempre viajando….

Es por eso por lo que quizás 66format ha adoptado este pseudónimo, consciente de lo que supuso en el cine, la adaptación de cada uno de sus fotogramas a este tipo de formato. Este fotógrafo ukraniano nacido en Kharlkov en 1981, muestra una clara preferencia por la fotografía en blanco y negro ya que le permiten cierta sensación de libertad para reflejar estados de ánimo y poder crear con plena libertad. Paradójicamente y a pesar de su pseudónimo, 66format casi siempre utiliza el formato cuadrado para sus fotografías.

In the history of painting, the proper canvas framed by a wooden structure, replaced the frescos and the murals during the Renaissance. In cinema, during the 50’s, the development of the “panoramic format” produced an opposit effect when the picture was replaced by a “wall”. The spectators did not feel the limits of the sreen in the same way as in the classic, academic and 1,33:1 movie formats. It took much longer to the spectator to assimilate the contents in a widesreen format and they were less aware of the limits on the right and left of the screen.

It might be for this reason that 66format has adopted this pseudonym, being aware of what the adaptation of the panoramic format meant to “the seventh art”and consequently to photography. This ukranian photographer born in Kharkov in 1981, shows a clear preference for Black & White photography, as it allows him a certain sense of freedom to reflect his feelings , moods and to create freely. Paradoxically, despite his nickname, 66format almost always uses the square format for his pictures…
