La Puerta del Sol de Madrid se ha quedado este lunes sin uno de sus símbolos más internacionales, el cartel de Tío Pepe que desde 1935 preside este espacio desde lo alto del edificio del número 1, de donde ha sido retirado para preservarlo mientras se realizan obras en el inmueble.
Éste fue uno de los pocos carteles publicitarios que se salvó de la ‘criba’ realizada por el Ayuntamiento con la ordenanza de Publicidad Exterior, que desde febrero de 2009 prohíbe este tipo de anuncios en las azoteas y fachadas de la capital, permitiendo sin embargo algunas excepciones como ésta, el cartel de Schweppes o el famoso Toro de Osborne.
El cartel de Tío Pepe es uno de los iconos más famosos del país, y actualmente es el único neón que queda en el kilómetro 0 de la capital. Fue diseñado por Luis Pérez Solero para las González Byass en homenaje al tío del fundador de la compañía, y la clave de su éxito estuvo en lo simple del concepto: una botella de Jerez con una chaquetilla, sombrero cordobés y una guitarra.
Así, el famoso ‘Sol de Andalucía’ podrá continuar mirando pasar la vida desde su privilegiada ubicación, donde fue instalado para conmemorar el primer centenario de la bodega. Last Monday, one of Madrid’s most international symbols, Tio Pepe’s billboard which presides the Puerta del Sol from the top of the building at number 1 -since 1935-, has been removed to preserve it while rehabilitation work is being done in the building.
This was one of the few billboards that “escaped” from the Outdoor Advertising Ordinance held by the City Council in February 2009 that prohibits advertisements on the roofs and façades of the capital, allowing only some exceptions for iconic billboards and neons such as Tio Pepe, Schweppes or Toro de Osborne.
Tio Pepe´s billboard is one of the most famous icons of Spain, and is currently the only neon that remains at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, known as the “km 0″ of the capital. It was designed by Luis Perez Solero for Gonzalez Byass in tribute to the uncle of the founder of the company, whose key to success was simple in concept: a bottle of sherry wearing a jacket, a typical cordovan hat and a guitar.
After completing the renovation of the building, the famous ‘Tio Pepe‘ will be able to continue watching life pass from its privileged location, where it was installed to commemorate the first anniversary of the winery.
